Produced in orthodontic metal, silver, or gold, the grillz are a kind of "cap" that are fitted to the teeth, and can cover just one or several of them.
For this, a mold of the patient's teeth is made - as in the case of braces, bruxism plates, and even teeth whitening - and then forwarded to a prosthetics laboratory where the model will be made.
As for the model of the jewelry, the client himself can choose according to his taste, so it is possible to opt for pieces made of gold, silver, or even with stones, like the one chosen by Luisa Sonza made of silver studded with zirconias.

Risks of wearing jewelry on your teeth
The first concern, according to dental surgeon Talita Dantas, must be with the way the fitting of the accessory will be done, because, besides the temporary versions, there are also fixed options.
"For grillz to fit well in the tooth, they either need to have an overcontour - that is, an excessive contour that can cause plaque buildup - or the tooth will need to be worn down so that it has an insertion axis that allows the attachment to be placed," she explains.

The second risk of wearing jewelry on the teeth is that oral hygiene may be compromised, in the case of removable and bulky pieces.
"They will have retentive areas. Therefore, hygiene is completely compromised, since it will be an area that will retain food and plaque. This, in turn, can lead to periodontal diseases, that is, gum diseases that range from simple inflammation to tooth loss."

How to use grillz without harming your oral health
Although there are fixed versions, those who wish to use grillz should choose temporary jewelry, because it stays in the mouth only as long as the person wants, without damaging the dental structure.
On the other hand, they demand extra care regarding hygiene, so that the accessory does not cause problems for the oral health.
In addition, the wearing time of the jewelry depends on each person's power of hygienic care.
"Therefore, it is recommended to keep the accessory as little as possible, so as not to impair brushing and flossing", she concludes.
