Comedones (blackheads): what they are and how to treat them
Table of contents
Comedones, also known as blackheads, are those little black or white dots that appear on the "T" zone of the face (forehead, nose, and chin) and other oily areas of the body, such as the neck, back, and shoulders. Thus, the condition arises from an abnormality in keratinization, which leaves the hair follicle blocked by cells, keratin, or excess sebum.
The good news is that the discomfort is only cosmetic and there is no symptom. However, in some cases, the comedones can turn into inflamed pimples.

Causes of Comedones
The causes for the appearance of comedones are many, so here are the main ones:
- Increase in circulating androgen hormones;
- Diseases with hormonal changes;
- Genetic factor;
- Excessive sun exposure;
- Use of oily cosmetics.
Treatment for comedones
The daily care routine is the best way to prevent the appearance of blackheads. Thus, bet on soaps, tonics, sunscreens, and dermocosmetics with salicylic acid to control oiliness and prevent excess sebum in the pores.
One should not squeeze the comedones on their own, as the attempt can leave blemishes and scars. Also, squeezing them can trigger an acne lesion at the site.
Professional skin cleansing helps not only to remove accumulated impurities, but also improves the aesthetic discomfort. Therefore, seek a dermatologist to know the best treatment for your case.
