Can't Get Out of Bed? You May Have Dysania
Table of contents
You might consider that there are few good reasons to get out of bed in the morning, especially in times of social isolation due to the coronavirus. The covers are warm, the world is cold, and you can keep putting off the alarm. But what if you feel like it's a more serious problem, and you really can't get out of bed? There's a word for that: you might have dysania .
What is dysania?
Dysania is a state of difficulty getting out of bed in the morning. Even if those affected have slept for hours longer than recommended, they may still have trouble getting up.
Dysania is not yet recognized as a formal condition. But it is a term that is occasionally used by medical professionals. Those who suffer from dysania usually have a serious mental health condition, such as depression.

There is a big difference between dysania and simply being tired, as many people feel exhausted when their alarm goes off first thing in the morning.
Instead of feeling tired, frustrated or challenged at the thought of getting out of bed, those with the condition will feel stressed, anxious, overwhelmed or even debilitated by the thought.

How to treat it?
While there is no official treatment or cure for those suffering from dysania, some small steps can be taken to try to reduce the symptoms.
Using sleep cycle apps, going to sleep much earlier than usual, or even using different alarms can help you get out of bed. Also, don't forget to remove distractions such as cell phones and laptops.
If, after all this, your inability to wake up in the morning is causing severe stress and anxiety, see a doctor.
